Countdown to Your Finance Career: Senior Year

Here are some areas to focus on during your senior year of college as you move forward and launch your finance career.

  • Continue building on your Junior year efforts.
  • At this point in your undergraduate career, you should be completely focused on applying and interviewing for full-time opportunities in your field of interest. Be sure to thoroughly research firms and industries before applying. Double check your resume to be certain it is an error-free document. Your resume is a snapshot of who you are as a professional.  Ensure that you are drawing the parallels between your skill set and the job description.
  • Update your 60-second pitch to focus on accomplishments and how your accomplishments have prepared you to perform for your “firm or industry of choice.”
  • Take advantage of mock interviewing workshops at your career services center. Practice telling your story, both in front of other people and in front of a mirror. Our interview tips should help.
  • Reach out to your network to remind them that you are graduating and that you are seeking full-time employment. Refer to business cards collected—do not hesitate to contact people you have met in the past who could help you in your career search.
  • Keep a diary of contacts to track all interviews and connections. Your diary should include contact information and any follow-up notes.
  • Continue building your network.
  • Continue conducting informational interviews only if necessary. Ask your career services office to connect you with alumni working at firms you are interested in applying to or tap your extended network for those connections. These contacts can provide you with insights into the organization to help you better prepare for the interview process.
  • Take your GMAT while the information is still fresh. Your score is good for five years.
